Wow,
I was on time for my show for once! In fact, I was a few minutes early
and I have Pete Stewart for a witness. It must have something to do
with some sort of cosmic energy spilling over from the approaching
Summer Soltice. Or maybe it was just the fact that the heat drove me
out of my house early and sent me running for the A/C at the station.
In any event, I had a fun time playing music for the first few hours
and then playing a Norman Corwin story followed by a in-studio
interview with Miles Marek, the founding producer/director of the
Fairfield Theater Company. Oh, and I told the story of Sailor the
Kitten!!! (More about Sailor in a minute.)
This week's music theme (there was a theme?): It was a rainy night in Westport and look who the rain brought us!
Here's the playlist:
Van Morrison:
Call Me Up In Dreamland (live cd single recorded in Switzerland) Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile) (from: St. Dominic's Preview; Warner Bros.)
Jackie Wilson
Reet Petite (from The Very Best of Jackie Wilson; Ace Records Ltd, London):
Well, have you ever seen a girl for whom your soul you'd
give
For whom you'd fight for, die for, pray to God you'd
lie for
She's so fine, she's so fine, she's really sweet
the finest girl
you ever wanna meet--she's reet petite!
OK, contest of the month: what the hell does "reet petite" mean?
(I break in and ramble for a few minutes)
Van Morrison
Days Like This
Mule Skinner Blues
(Both from: Van Morrison Live at the Austin City Limits Festival--this great double cd has not
been released in the USA but if you email me, I will lead you to a store
in Dublin that will get you one and deliver it quickly)
Floyd Tillman:
Slippin' Around (from: Sir Douglas Presents Lonestar Jukebox: Two Decades of Texas Treats/Doug Sahm)
Roy Head (I forget what I played by Roy, but thanks to the woman
who called and told me about seeing Roy in Texas clubs back in the
early 1960's--who I wish I'd been there! Thanks! She was in Brookfield,
I think...but I forget her name, darn.)
Doug Sahm and the Traits:
Get Out of My Life, Woman (from: Sir Douglas Presents Lonestar Jukebox: Two Decades of Texas Treats/Doug Sahm; Crazy Cajun Records)
That Doug Sahm double cd of Texas music is one of the best compilations
I've ever heard. If you like Texas music and want a sampling of some of
the more legendary "real" stars of the genre, look for this cd.
Sleepy LaBeef
Standing In the Need of Prayer (from: Strange Things Happening; Rounder CD 3129)
Blind Boys of Alabama
Didn't It Rain
If I Had a Hammer
(both from: If I Had a Hammer; Intersound 5997)
I break in and talk here and tell a short story about seeing a group
called The Rich Kids (a Long Island group featuring the great guitarist
& singer Richie Supa) and the Nines Discoteque in Westport,
Connecticut.
Sir Douglas Quintet
One Way Out (There's a Man Down There; from Sir Douglas Presents Lonestar Jukebox: Two Decades of Texas Treats/Doug Sahm; Crazy Cajun Records)
Wiggy's Ramblings! The Story of Sailor the Kitty!
I ramble through the story of how Lynne
rescued a beautiful little stray kitty in a horrific rainstorm on June
3rd and then adopted it. She named it Sailor and his picture is below.
Everyone laughed at Lynne the first three or four days when she said
she was just going to foster the cat and think about owning it.
Her vet asked her: "Have you named the cat yet?" and when she said, "Yes, his name is Sailor"
The vet said "Well, what you've got there is a new cat!" She was right.
This is a beautiful and wonderfully friendly cat and if you have room
in your life for a stray cat, be sure to contact a local rescue group
or the ASPCA or Humane Society. You'll not only be saving a kitten or
cat, but potentially thousands of songbirds, as well.
I also tell the story (have you ever known me to get to the point
directly?) about being hired to interview Elvis Presley who was
discovered alive and working on a mule farm in Tennessee.
Some music for Sailor...
Brook Benton
Rainy Night in Georgia (written by Tony Joe White) (from: Home Style; DBK Works Records)
The Rolling Stones
Stray Cat Blues (from: Beggars Banquet; ABKCO Records, digital remastered version)
Bob Dylan
High Water (from: Love and Theft; Columbia) This is one of my favorite all-time Dylan albums, fantastic.
Then moving on...
Saturday Night Live Cast: Cast Recording
Speed (with Lorraine Newman, I think)
Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez (for those who called and asked, this is the duet with the nice vocals and violin work by Carrie)
Don't Speak in English (from: The Trouble with Humans; Trainwreck Records; www.trainwreckrecords.com)
Artie Traum
Back in the Sugar Cane(from the cd: Theif of
Time; Roaring Stream Records; www.artietraum.com) This is Artie's
new CD, a beautiful album, and this is the kind of Brazilian-sounding
mystical/romantic song that several people have called asking me about.
Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez
Loredo (from: The Trouble with Humans; Trainwreck Records; www.trainwreckrecords.com)
Roy Brown, Tito Auger and Tao Rodriguez
Deportado (from the cd Que Vaya Bien; www.quevayabien.com) A wonderful version of the classic Woody Guthrie song (song in Spanish).
Happy Traum
Empty Pocket Blues (from: I Walk the Road Again; Roaring Stream
Records; www.roaringstreamrecords.com; www.happytraum.com) This was
another song I got calls about--Happy is, of course, Artie's brother
and this is Happy's new cd and a great piece of acoustic guitar and
vocal work.
Delbert McClinton
Down Into Mexico (from: Cost of Living; New*West Records)
Wow, a GREAT album from Delbert! Thanks to my friend Jonathan Parsons
for giving me this terrific cd--thanks Jonathan! You rock!
Professor Louie & the Crowmatix
Century of the Blues (from: The Spirit of Woodstock, Recorded Live at the New York State Museum; Woodstock Records, www.woodstockrecords.com)
Delbert McClinton
One of the Fortunate Few (from: Cost of Living; New*West Records)
