Danny Kalb Interview April 15th
On Tuesday April 15th (tentative time: 3 p.m.) I'll be interviewing the legendary guitarist & singer Danny Kalb on my show for the second time. Danny is one of the founding members of the Blues Project--arguably the greatest American blues band ever. Danny is a stunning musician, a fascinating person and last time he was on the show we talked for an hour about everything from the history of the Blues Project to the history of the world. It's going to be an interview worth tuning in for. Also, Danny, along with Stefan Grossman and Steve Katz will be at Fairfield University's Quick Center on Friday April 25th--see below!
Concert Announcement:

The Acoustic Blues Project

If you happen to be in the Fairfield, Connecticut area and are a fan of acoustic blues, the Quick Center is presenting a concert you shouldn't miss! The Acoustic Blues Project featuring Stefan Grossman, Danny Kalb and Steve Katz will be there on Friday night April 25th, 2008.

T
hese three of America's foremost guitarists have been playing together since they were teens, and with the likes of favorites such as Dave Van Ronk, Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, John Sebastian, Maria Muldaur, Even Dozen Jug Band, David Grisman, Merle Travis, Brownie McGhee and Chet Atkins to name a few. Steve Katz, founding member of Blood, Sweat and Tears and the Blues Project, along with Danny Kalb, founding member of the Blues Project, and Stefan Grossman, an acclaimed guitarist and educator, have been playing folk and blues to jug bands, rock and world music. Together they cover the gamut of musical styles, and remain as exciting and cutting edge as ever. They will electrify you acoustically, as they soar melodically.

If you've never listened to a fully indpendent noncommercial radio station before you've missed one of the most creative and inspiring forms of broadcast radio. And WPKN is one of the best independent radio stations you're likely to find. WPKN is a 100% listener-supported radio station broadcasting at 89.5 FM in Bridgeport, Connecticut and 88.7 (as WPKM) in Montauk, Long Island, New York. We also broadcast on the web and you can get to our home page by clicking on the logo at right. We stream live 24 hours a day and you'll find all the help you need to listen to the stream on our home page.

I have been doing radio at WPKN for nearly 15 years and it's been a great deal of fun and a terrific learning experience. I actually do two shows: a solo show on the third Tuesday of each month from 2-5:30 p.m. ET and the Beppo & Gito Mongul show with my radio partner Ken Brown (scroll down) on the second and fifth Tuesday of each month (and when there is a fifth Tuesday) also from 2-5:30 p.m. ET.

On my solo show I play a lot of music and interview all sorts of people, including musicians, actors, writers, photographers, illustrators, storytellers and almost anyone I can convince to come into the studio (or talk on the phone) with me.

My previous radio guests (most of them in-studio) have included:

Ian "Sammy" Samwell (legendary rock producer; John Mayall's first producer, Sir Cliff Richard's first producer and songwriting partner, early Beatles friend and influence)

Kevin Bacon (actor & musician)

Michael Bacon (composer/musician--Kevin's brother)

Rick Danko (founding bassist of The Band, Ringo Starr's All-Stars)

Garth Hudson (founding keyboardist of The Band)

John Platania (The Van Morrison Band, Van Morrison's Caledonia Soul Orchestra)

Danny Kalb (guitarist, singer, founding member of The Blues Project)

Anton Fig (drummer--The CBS/David Letterman Orchestra)

Professor Louie (aka Aaron Hurwitz) & The Crowmatix

Marion Owen ("The Upbeet Gardener")

Gary Burke (The Crowmatix, Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review, Joe Jackson Band

Livingston Taylor (singer/songwriter)

Eric Andersen (singer/songwriter)

Tom Pachecho (singer/songwriter)

Jay O'Callahan (storyteller)

Peter Guttman (travel photographer)

David Small (children's illustrator--2000 Caldecott Medal Winner),

Graham Parker (British rock legend)

Murali Coryell (blues guitarist)

Jim Weider (blues guitarist, former member The Band)

Artt Frank (longtime Chet Baker sideman)

Mark Borax (astrologer/writer/singer/songwriter)

Miles Marek (actor/producer/theater director)

Artie Traum (singer/songwriter/acoustic guitar virtuoso)

Jeff Pevar (guitarist, Crosby, Stills & Nash)

Richard Serbagi (classical conductor)

THE BEPPO & GITO MONGUL SHOW

And if listening to music and dull interviews makes you want to slap the kid's hamster, then tune in on the second and fifth Tuesdays and listen to Ken Brown (aka Gito Mongul) and myself (aka Beppo Mongul) for three-and-a-half hours of incisive, penetrating, lubricating---oh wait, wrong show. If you want to be annoyed almost immediately and find out just how pathetic two morons with microphones can be, then you must listen to this show. Just remember the Mongul Bros motto:  "If it's too banal, disgusting or degrading for human consumption, it's just right for our show." And our other motto: "Abraham Lincoln was shot because his hat was too big."

Oh, and these guys actually personally know THE EXPERT GUYS!!! Tune in because if you don't, you won't know if we're robbing your house at that moment or not. And remember, no wagering is allowed.

Wait, I can't hear myself...are you sure my mic is turned on?

Hey, we need an intern! Chuck! Put down that joint and go get us a pizza!

Homespun Tapes Catalog
Music Site of the Month: Homespun Tapes

I get a lot of questions from WPKN/WPKM listeners about good music-related websites and so I've decided to feature a different site here each month--some will be musicians home sites, others will be club and live venue sites and this month I've chosen to begin things with the Homespun Tapes music instruction site.

Founded by acoustic guitarist and folkie Happy Traum (Artie's brother--and, of course, half of the legendary duo of Happy and Artie Traum) more than 40 years ago, Homespun publishes the most extensive catalog of instructional cds and tapes anywhere. Each of the instructional programs is taught by a virtuoso musician and Happy has somehow convinced some of the biggest names in the industry to star in Homespun's productions, including such notables as: Eddie Adcock (banjo), John Sebastian (a great harmonica tape for beginners--my copy is nearly worn out!), Tony Rice (guitar), Doc Watson (Doc teaches flatpicking--can you beat that?), Keb Mo (blues guitar), Dr. John (Mac Rebenac--can you believe it? The Nightripper teaching piano!), Paul Butterfield (harmonica)--and a ton more. And, of course, both Artie and Happy teach, as well. It's an embarassment of teaching gold.

Among the latest additions--Professor Louie from the Crowmatix teaches a master class in rock 'n roll accordian. Other than having a music legend move into your spare bedroom, there's really no better way to learn from the masters than to have them as close as your DVD or VHS player. I've bought several of the programs over the years and they are beautifully produced and nothing but solid learning and entertainment from the opening notes. Lots of programs for kids, too.

Check out the site and tell them Jeff from WPKN sent you :)
