Music, Interviews and lots of Van Morrison...

If you've never listened to a fully independent noncommercial radio station before you've missed one of the most creative and inspiring forms of broadcast radio. And WPKN is one of the best independent radio stations you're likely to find. WPKN is a 100% listener-supported radio station broadcasting at 89.5 FM in Bridgeport, Connecticut. We also broadcast on the web (www.wpkn.org) and you can get to our home page by clicking on the logo at right. We stream live 24/7 in high-quality digital and you'll find all the help you need to listen to the stream on our home page.

I have been doing radio at WPKN for about 20 years and it's been a great deal of fun and a terrific learning experience.  I play a lot of music and interview all sorts of people, including musicians, actors, writers, photographers, illustrators, storytellers and almost anyone I can convince to come into the studio (or talk on the phone) with me.  I believe I have broadcast more of Van Morrison's music than any other DJ, on any station, anywhere on the planet--and I am humbled to be able to say that. Thanks Van.

Note: My solo show is currently on hiatus while I write another book, but I shall return! In the meantime...

I am also one half of the Beppo & Gito Mongul Show--read more about that below.

My previous radio guests (most of them in-studio) have included:

The Beppo & Gito Mongul Show
THE BEPPO & GITO MONGUL SHOW

And if listening to music and dull interviews makes you want to slap the kid's hamster, then tune in on the first Monday of each month at 3 p.m. and listen to Ken Brown (aka Gito Mongul) and myself (aka Beppo Mongul) for three-and-a-half hours of incisive, penetrating, lubricating---oh wait, wrong show. If you want to be annoyed almost immediately and find out just how pathetic two morons with microphones can be, then you must listen to this show. Just remember the Mongul Bros motto:  "If it's too banal, disgusting or degrading for human consumption, it's just right for our show." And our other motto: "Abraham Lincoln was shot because his hat was too big."

Oh, and these guys actually personally know THE EXPERT GUYS!!! Tune in because if you don't, you won't know if we're robbing your house at that moment or not. And remember, no wagering is allowed.

Wait, I can't hear myself...are you sure my mic is turned on?

Hey, we need an intern! Chuck! Put down that joint and go get us a pizza!

Thanks for the interview Cherry! Thanks Hilly! It was a great afternoon!!!

Special Radio Event
Cherry Vanilla Interview: December 2, 2010 3-6 p.m.
Additional Guest: Hilly Michaels

I'm really psyched to announce that on Thursday December 2, 2010 groupie/singer/actress/writer Cherry Vanilla will be a guest on my WPKN 89.5 FM radio show for the entire three hours. Cherry has "lived the life" in the rock 'n roll world since Elvis first swiveled his hips and has been a touchstone to more famous people than you can imagine: she helped introduce David Bowie to American audiences, starred in Andy Warhol's play "Pork" in London, has had erotic romps with innumerable rockers in  a variety of countries and has finally put the whole story in her new memoir "Lick Me: How I Became Cherry Vanilla." It's a fascinating story and eyewitness to the strange, sometimes seedy and often bizarre world of rock 'n roll. Her book is an amazing chronicle that few got to experience and none more fully that Ms. Vanilla.

From Publishers Weekly

A fixture in the music and club scenes since the 1960s, musician, groupie, and PR woman extraordinaire Vanilla takes readers on a wild romp through her drug- and sex-filled life. Born Kathleen Dorritie in Queens in 1943, Vanilla loved music from an early age and would often accompany her parents to the Copacabana in Manhattan, where she once met Dean Martin. Raucous parties--often fueled by acid and pot--were a fixture of her life in the '60s, as she dabbled in DJing in clubs and built an advertising career on Madison Avenue. In 1970, Vanilla had "a rock and roll revelation": she wanted to become a groupie, even though she was "already a twenty-six-year-old businesswoman of sorts." This led to trysts with musicians like Kris Kristofferson and David Bowie, whom she helped introduce to American audiences. As punk music began to overtake glam rock, Vanilla launched her own music career and briefly toured in the U.K., with the Police as her backup band, and later in the U.S. Vanilla's voice is distinctively sassy, despite her conventional storytelling methods, and her memoir is an entertaining peek into music's backstage world. Also joining us for the afternoon, legendary drummer Hilly Michaels who will be giving the radio debut of his brand new album Pop This!
