Very often the difference between an average photo or
snapshot and a great photo is the amount of thought and energy put into
the design. From deciding where to put your subject in the frame to how
close you get to your subject, every decision you make in the design
process has a very profound impact on the power of your images. And
what's the point of finding a beautiful subject to photograph if all
you're going to do is slap it into the frame?
I was recently asked by the American Photo magazine and Nikon to
write a series of design tips for the website and I came
up with 10 simple design steps that I think will help you create
bolder, more thoughtful photographs. Of coruse you won't be able to use
all 10 for any given photo, but the more you're aware of the design
& compositional choices you make each time you put the camera to
your eye, the more likely you'll be pleased with your pictures. Just
