One of the most dramatic Gothic cathedrals in Europe, Notre-Dame de Paris ("Our Lady of Paris") sits upon its own island in the Seine, the Ile
de la Cite. Although contstruction originally began in 1163 (and took
180 years to complete), the buildling has gone through several periods
of deterioration and rebuidling, the most recent major renovation began
in 1844. It's a fascinating building to visit and to photograph and
other than a ban on tripods on Cathedral grounds, you are free to
photograph both inside and out. There are hundreds of relief
scultptures on the main facade that are a particularly fascinating subject to photograph--as the light changes throughout the day, so do the colors and textures and shadows of the figures. At twilight the plaza aroud the cathedral turns into a very festive gathering of toursits and street performers and the atmosphere is very fun and romantic.
