About my books...
Exposure Photo Workhop (Wiley, 2008)
Here
is everything you ever wanted to know about exposure in a single
volume. I believe this is the most comprehensive (and most fun to read)
book on exposure that is on the market. The book is very current
(published in 2008) and it covers everything from the theory of
exposure and metering to exposing for very difficult situations. My
philosophy of exposure is that since it's the most crucial part
(technically, anyway) of the photographic process, you really need to
understand what you're doing and how small changes will have a profound
impact on your photos. Also, I stress repeatedly in the book that
exposure is not about "right or wrong" but about what you want
to reveal, visually and emotionally, about a scene. This book assumes
no prior knowledge of the theory of exposure and yet I don't think that
anyone--beginner or pro--won't get some very useful information from
the book (if I didn't think so, I would never have written the book).
Sit down for an evening with this book and your camera and you will
become a much more confident photographer.
Exposure Photo Workshop by Jeff Wignall
The Joy of Digital Photography (Lark Books, 2006)
The Joy of Digital Photography was written as both an introduction to and a
celebration of digital photography. It's a 304-page (both hardcover and
paper versions are available), beautifully designed and reproduced. The book
covers every aspect of digital photography,
including: how digital cameras differ from film cameras, how to buy
your first digital camera, what accessories are available (and which
are worth owning), choosing lenses, using flash, etc. There is also a
very in-depth look at designing/composing interesting and powerful
pictures that I think photographers of all levels will find
interesting. There is also a very in-depth chapter on natural lighting.
The book also had extensive chapters on shooting specific subjects,
including: people (portraits, sports, candids, etc.) and nature
(landscapes, wildlife, birds, etc.). There is also a chapter on
the digital
darkroom with a very easy-to-understand introduction to both basic and
advanced Photoshop techniques, including step-by-step tutorials on
things
like hue & saturation controls, curves, replacing skies and
backgrounds, distorting shapes and creating elaborate montage effects.
There is also a basic introduction to printing terms and techniques.
If you're looking for one comprehensive book to introduce you to the world of digital photography, this is the book.
The Joy of Digital Photography by Jeff Wignall
"...The best feature of The Joy of Digital Photography,
however, is the way Wignall makes everything sound so easy and
exciting. He writes as if he were a trusted, teaching friend, and the
gorgeous photography that accompanies each subject only serves to
inspire the reader more."
